I hardly ever review books, but I was really disappointed by this one. I had read rave reviews for it around the web. I got a few chapters into it and gave up. This is a written in a very bizarre style. I had a hard time finding the message (or following the general flow of her writing) in all of the imagery. The idea behind this is a good one, but unfortunately - for me - it was lost in the author's writing style.

One Thousand Gifts A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are (Audible Audio Edition) Ann Voskamp Zondervan Books Reviews

I started this book last summer. I was riveted by the first chapter and could relate to her experience growing up in a family whose faith in God died at the onset of tragedy. I'd hope to throw back a curtain of sadness in my life because of the death of my mother when I was a child. I thought finally a Christian author that I could relate to. I didn't feel like her listing of 1000 gifts was formulaic. 'I will do this so that I can get that" type of books don't work for me. Instead I felt that she was on an authentic journey in which she herself didn't know the outcome.
I read the second chapter and had questions but decided I needed to take my time and absorb what she was writing. The subsequent chapters didn't do anything for me. I found myself wondering what on earth she was talking about. Especially after she quit making her list. I'd heard so many people raving about this book that I wondered what my problem was. I don't get her floaty, lyrical style of writing. Some of the things she said made it feel like she were living and writing in a different century.
I finished the book hoping that there would be a conclusion to her story and that it would all be wrapped up. Instead the last chapter was strange.
I've popped in to read her blog and get the impression that what she has to say could be said in a more concise manner.
I think there is a lot of value in making a list of gifts and I will do that. Apart from that, I do not get the hype.
One of the best books i have read in a long time! I am reading slowly, since Ann Voskamp has a deep understanding of our humanness! She is painfully honest from her life testimonies. I'm inspired by her reflective, poetic style of writing. For many years i have often wondered how it would be possible to be thankful in every situation! Ann beautifully describes the "Euchristeo" effect on our lives. it is definitely not a book to speed-read through, but she gently causes me to ask myself some deep questions. I like the phrase, "I can't fill with joy until I learn how to trust. The full life, the one spilling joy and peace, happens only as I come to trust the caress of the Lover, Lover who never burdens His children with shame or self-condemnation but keeps stroking the fears with gentle grace."

I have bought several copies to give to friends, and i have also downloaded on my Iphone! Linda Reinhardt
I was hopeful, but finally just gave up on the book 3/4 of the way through. It really doesn't have any deep grit, or offer deep theological life applications for helping one get through tough times. I wasted much of my time reading about her romantic moments with the farmer and her running through a field at night with a camera.
God has given Mrs. Voskamp an incredible talent in being able to put her thoughts down on paper so beautifully. I am not a profound or deep thinker so I was amazed that I was caught right up in the amazing insights God has given this woman. It took me a few pages to get used to her style of writing, lots of incomplete sentences, but once I caught on I was swept away by her style. The first few pages had me sobbing with the intensity of her sorrow but it quickly leveled out and became less intense. It continues on like that throughout the book, sometimes very deep and thought provoking and other times almost boring and slow. Occasionally I found myself bored as she can tend to drag out the thought process but it was definitely worth it to stick with it and finish. My mother who is a deep and sometimes melancholy thinker, easily depressed by sin and sorrow, couldn't read the book. She said it was too much like she already thinks everyday and it was too heavy. When she reads she wants something light or if it is spiritually deep, short. The chapters are definitely long so I understood what she was saying. But for me, who needed someone to help me process though deeper thoughts like why we suffer and what to do with our suffering, I found it extremely helpful, Biblical and uplifting.
Ann Voskamp's writing style is poetic and flowing, and I've read reviews indicating that's bothersome. It's more a psalm than a gospel, more a poem than a narrative tale. But it IS her story, of coming through tragedy and trying one way to live and then dropping all her defenses and being open to whatever God gives.

Her view, her way of telling what she sees, and her bedrock foundation in Scripture make this a book worth having, even if you don't like her writing style.

I know there are folks who have problems with it. For example, her use of the Scriptural analogy of bride and groom to explain the relationship between Christ and His church, for example, apparently gives some people the heebie-jeebies. (I would encourage them to remember just exactly WHERE she found that picture, to begin with.) Apparently, her finding God's fingerprints in her life on every single surface also undoes some people. I don't know what to say to them, except perhaps they might benefit from reading Brother Laurence's "Practicing the Presence." Perhaps the writing style in that book is more suited to their tastes, and the message is about the same you find what you look for. Worship isn't singing, it's praising and serving and listening to God--things better done in the minutes of mundane life than in the hour or so most folks spend in church each week.
